Noorilim Estate

Noorilim Estate

Annie Gray & Joyce Tanwei

Just a little under 2 hours north of Melbourne along the Hume and Goulburn Valley Highways, there lies a striking 19th century mansion, Noorilim Estate. Built in the year 1879 in the midst of the Victorian era, the house was built and lived in by a wealthy pastoralist, William Irving Winter. William was from a wealthy family and Noorilim was just one of the many grand homesteads built by the family, as around the time they held two hundred and fifty thousand acres of land. Prior to the construction of the Goulburn Weir in 1891, the plains of the lower Goulburn River that the estate is now situated on used to flood.  The estate is called Noorilim as it translates to ‘many lagoons’, after a local Aboriginal Tribe that used to live in this region.

Full of history, Noorilim Estate has had 11 owners and has been previously used as a sheep and cattle station, private residence, thoroughbred horse stud and currently is used as a vineyard. It is now classified by the National Trust and offers a prime destination for weddings, functions and photography. The current owners have been in charge since 1998, establishing 65 acres of Merlot, Cabernet, Shiraz, Viognier and Chardonney grapes.

Centuries old, yet beautifully maintained, many who visit Noorilim Estate marvel at the exquisite Italianate architecture of the building, representing one of the best examples of this style in the country. There is an exquisite attendant tower resembling other Victorian buildings such as Werribee Park and the Victorian Houses of Parliament built in this period.  Known for designing Mintaro at Monegeeta and Frognall at Cantebury, the architect of this magnificent building was James Gall.

The estate is set amongst 75 acres of vineyards, inland lakes and many acres of botanical gardens, said to be in the top 90 historic gardens recognised by the state government. The picturesque surroundings are also home to 150 native wildlife species, so you are sure to spot a kookaburra, cockatoo, koala or even kangaroo whilst on the estate.  Peacocks and other birdlife flock the estate’s vineyards and gardens, welcoming visitors as they make their way off the main road, up a tree-lined path. The Goulburn valley region in Central VIctoria is a must-see for those who want to discover more about Australia’s history and experience superb wineries and restaurants.

Bookings can guarantee visitors exclusive high-tea, single or group entrance to the estate grounds as well as tours of the mansion. For a list of Noorilim Estate’s open days or more information about booking tours visit: http://www.noorilimestate.com.au/experience-piece-history
